This series was my initial look into memory and how it forms a sense of self, I wanted to explore placement through my own imagery as well as my granny's archive. At this point in my university career we had begun to look at Lacan's Dreams and Stages theory and Bowlby and Ainsworth's attachment theory. Both interested me as I had naively never thought of a self-narrated life, and how the language I choose to use can deeply affect my own relationship to life, and how the actions I choose are closely related to memories and coping mechanisms built from said memories.
I scanned my Granny's childhood drawings, images of herself as a child and my dad as a child. I collated these with memories I had of her, and memories we share together. We both have a love of photography, baking and arguably we are both incredibly nostalgic, I think I have gained my hoarding tendencies from her. I created a video that went along-side the research for this series which showcased all the conversations I had with my Granny, Helen about her childhood and the photographs she had taken all through her life, as well as the diaries she keeps every year.
I wanted to link some of these themes to the most poignant themes in my own life and how I create a narrative tone around them. This was when I first started thinking about my relationship to life, and how I capture it and how I choose to remember it.
